All about cookies....
What are cookies?
A "cookie" is a small piece of information sent by a web server to store on a web browser so it can later be read back from that browser. This is useful for having the browser remember some specific information.
What are they used for?
An example is when a browser stores your passwords and user ID's. They are also used to store preferences of start pages or items placed in shopping cart. Both Microsoft and Netscape use cookies to create personal start pages.
Cookies are a very misunderstood technology. Approximately 85% of all internet shopping sites use them. The most common reason for consumers to have cookies disabled is that they do not want the Web site owner to 'keep track' of what they are doing, and where they are going within the site.
The following is a description of what's happening 'behind the scenes' at a site that does NOT use cookies. When you..
Visit a 'cookie free' site, and purchase something
the site owner knows everywhere you have been and every product you have looked at even with cookies turned off. Consider this: When you first arrive at the site, you are given a temporary 'ID'. You may or may not see this, as it could be happening on the webserver itself. This 'ID' is passed on to every link you visit within the site. When you are ready to complete your purchase and enter your personal information, the web server records all of this information into your user profile. The exact same information is recorded on the server whether cookies are enabled or not.
Visit a 'cookie free' site, and just browse,
the web server records the links you have visited as an 'anonymous user'.
How XSDepot.com uses cookies
As with most sites, this site uses cookies to determine who you are and what you are doing on this site. You may browse this site with cookies disabled, but they must be enabled to order. This is the way that we keep track of what you have in your shopping basket.
If you are a reseller, we use cookies to let you have access to the reseller area of the web site. As a reseller, we must validate you when you visit the site in order to verify that you are a registered reseller. We just happen to use cookies to do this. If it is preferable to our resellers, we can disable the use of cookies. In this case, all resellers will have to 'Log In' to see the dealer system. After this login, you will be able to see the dealer system. Keep in mind that logging on to the system in this fashion is exactly the same as having cookies enabled. Once a web server knows who you are, it keeps track of you.
